What a sports media and its readers do to videogame competitions: Discourse analysis of the esport section of L’Équipe.fr

In this article we examine the role of the esport section of L’Équipe.fr within the larger context of the digitization of sport and sports journalism. Contrary to predictions of radical change in the sporting spectacle, this study reveals how a traditional sporting logic is at the centre of sports media, in the articles produced and in online commentary spaces. Through media framing analysis, we show how journalists as well as esport section detractors and supporters work together to frame esport around the hegemonic sporting ideal and how these actors contribute to sportivising this practice.
