Le Ghimeș, dans la haute vallée du Trotuș dans les Carpates orientales roumaines, est devenu à partir de 2008 et en seulement quelques années un haut lieu de la ferveur nationale hongroise. L’article reconstitue le processus de convocation des « fantômes historiques » par des acteurs locaux et extérieurs dans ce petit pays de la minorité Csángós. Il montre comment se combinent l’affirmation identitaire et l’opportunisme économique dans le processus d’invention d’un lieu de mémoire de « la frontière de mille ans » et analyse les effets de la concurrence des symboles sur la réification et la dualisation des identités culturelles et territoriales.

Beginning in 2008 and over the span of a few short years, Ghimeș – in the upper Trotuș valley, in the Eastern Carpathians of Romania – became a center for Hungarian national fervor. This article retraces how local and foreign actors, within the limited territory of the Csángós minority, summon “historical phantoms”. It shows how the affirmation of identity has combined with economic opportunism in the invention of a memorial site dedicated to the “Thousand year” border. It also analyses the effects of the competition of symbols on the reification and dualization of cultural and territorial identities.
