Between autistic defenses and psychotic defenses, a bonded baby who rejects cuddles

The early detection of babies at risk of autism poses the question of the complexity of the diagnosis, and the risk of seeing its development in deterministic terms.Through an account of the psychoanalysis of Lilian, a twenty-month-old baby who displayed warning signs of autism with her parents, we describe the symptoms and defenses, and the intertwining and succession of autistic and psychotic elements and the transference process on the basis of the construction of the corporeal ego. Lilian’s favorable development testifies to the importance of early treatment from a psychodynamic and developmental point of view.
