Empirical research in psychotherapy has been challenged in terms of both its principles and its methods. The same demand for performance has extended to other sectors of social action, with polemically disputed results. A brief epistemological analysis will show how we meet with analogous methodological impasses in the evaluation of subjectivity and in the domains of the social sciences. Taking into account the complexity of the subjective and the singularity of each case allows for the development of research studies that are more scientific because they are closer to an individualized clinical approach.
