Radicality, conceived as a form of exclusive, agonistic, and sometimes violent engagement in favor of a valued cause, is captured in the diversity of the domains in which it appears: religion, politics, but also artistic ideal, the concern with corporal purity, including veganism, and blind faith in alternative medicine. This wide spectrum leads to it being considered as a commonplace phenomenon. In this article, it is examined from the perspective of a critical epistemology (what are the types of beliefs and relationships to truth that make it probable?), a sociology of its capacity to mobilize through the figures of the hero, the saint, and the martyr, and their recognition within a group of chosen ones. One last point deals with “emerging radicalities” and their place in the construction of persons on an identity and axiological level.
