The aim of this paper is to provide an analysis of the logics involved in defining the value of research data, which can influence the criteria for sharing them. The methodological approach is based on a qualitative survey, conducted during a doctoral research project, which deployed 57 semi-structured interviews. While most scientific work on data focuses on the barriers and motivations for sharing, the originality of this research consists in identifying how the value of data impacts the decision of sharing them. The results show that, in all fields, data value still remains crystallized around the publication and symbolic recognition of the researcher’s work. The study allows us to understand that the question of sharing is confronted with an “unthought”: that of the current framework of research evaluation, which places scientific papers at the heart of its mechanism. This work thus contributes to showing that the future of data sharing depends on alternative future systems of research evaluation, associated with open science.
