Rethinking academic support for girls in Senegal: the House of Education in Ziguinchor as a means of (re)enrolling them in school

Rather than limiting itself, as most existing programs do, to stopping students from dropping out or promoting access to school for girls from an early age, the Maison de l’Éducation (MDE) [House of Education] scheme, set up in 2014 in Ziguinchor by the Futur au présent [Future to Present] association, aims, by accompanying them throughout the elementary cycle, to enable girls who have already dropped out of school or who are too old to enter it normally, to return to public schooling. This article is based on a qualitative study of the individual paths of girls who have passed through the MDE scheme, in order to analyse its positive effects, but also to raise the question of its possible extension.
