The resources of a museum such as the Historial de la Grande Guerre de Péronne, a museum of the history of mentalities, offer a good overview of religious practices in the face of mass death. The French Catholic soldiers of 1914-1918 certainly left written testimonies on their preparation for death. But many preserved small objects of piety bring a tangible human and spiritual dimension, necessary to understand the religious mobilization of millions of men. These marks of renewed belief are as much part of the spiritual impetus as the religious comfort expected during the 52 months of this war, combining God and Homeland, civilization and religion.
