Cet article met l’accent sur certains problèmes posés par l’élaboration d’une grammaire historique du français. Après avoir examiné la question de la périodisation et l’importance à accorder aux facteurs externes, on s’attache plus particulièrement à la description des faits linguistiques. Une difficulté spécifique est liée au changement des catégories morphosyntaxiques et à l’évolution d’unités syntaxiques ou textuelles, comme la phrase, la proposition ou la période. On discute enfin le choix de théories syntaxiques les mieux adaptées à l’étude du changement linguistique.

On some problems peculiar to the elaboration of historical grammarThis article focuses on some problems posed by the elaboration of a historical grammar of French language. After examining the question of period delimitation and the importance to attach to external factors, we pay particular attention to the description of linguistic facts. A specific difficulty is depending to change concerning word classes and to evolution of syntactic or textual units as sentence, clause or period. We thus discuss the choice of the syntactical theories which are the best adapted to a study of linguistic change.
