RésuméCette contribution souhaite réfléchir sur l’iconographie géographique, c’est-à-dire sur la relation complexe entre l’image et l’écrit à l’intérieur des textes produits par les géographes. À ce sujet, un exemple original et particulièrement instructif nous est fourni par la géographie africaniste française. En effet, pour les géographes africanistes la photographie est l’iconographie la plus apte à montrer toute une gamme de connotations, en fonction de son insertion plus ou moins réussie dans le texte.

This contribution discusses geographic iconography that means the complex relationship between picture and writing in the texts produced by geographers. For this purpose, an original and particularly instructive example is given by the French africanist geography. In fact, africanist geographers show that photography is an iconography able to display different levels of connotation, related to the integration more or less successfully in the text.
