RésuméL’Afrique semble rester une terre ouverte et, à ce titre, un espace d’expansion encore offert à la concurrence des religions à vocation universelle. C’est sans compter avec le fonds religieux coutumier qui introduit la diffusion chrétienne et musulmane jusqu’au cœur de la vie sociale et politique. Il en résulte des arrangements plus complexes qu’un simple partage des territoires. Ce qui paraît bien en ville par des cohabitations et des partages très « africains » qui font alterner tension et tranquillité dans le mouvement général et continué d’identification.

Africa appears still to be open territory and, as such, a space that remains available in which universalist religions can compete and expand. That does not allow for the strong foundation of traditional religion which brings the spreading of Christian or Muslim faith into the heart of social and political life. This process results in arrangements that are more complex than a straightforward dividing up of territories. Such situations show up well in towns, where characteristically African ways of cohabitation and division induce alternating situations of tension and calm in the overall continuous identification process.
