How to speak firmly and frankly whilst preserving the neutrality that makes the ethos of the historian? This contradiction guides the words of Protestants after the massacre of St Bartholomew. They strive to denounce a guilty monarchy as well as continuing the partisan fight dictated by their faith at the same time as they attempt to keep to the historian’s strainght and narrow path of seeking the truth. The paradox is in fact only apparent, since this truth is dictated by God, and God only allows the words of the parrhesiast.
