Anacréon constitue un modèle paradoxal : son œuvre presque entièrement disparue est cependant constamment imitée, et sa biographie lacunaire l’assimile tantôt à un sage tantôt à un vieillard galant, au sens parfois péjoratif du terme. La question s’est posée, pour ses émules et imitateurs, de faire coïncider ces deux figures en apparence contradictoires du « sage » Anacréon loué par Platon et du « galant » Anacréon qui a donné son nom à un courant poétique associé à la légèreté de l’inspiration érotique et bachique. Les lacunes de son œuvre et de sa biographie ont encouragé la constitution d’une figure fantasmée, selon une logique dont il convient d’interroger les enjeux. L’affabulation biographique semble inscrite dans les béances mêmes de l’œuvre, qui ne pourrait exister comme telle que soutenue par ce travail de reconstruction de la figure auctoriale et de légitimation du modèle, à travers la réhabilitation de sa galanterie, perçue et présentée comme idéal social et poétique autant qu’érotique.

Figures and Figuration of Anacreon as Gallant PoetAnacreon is a paradoxical model : his poetry has almost completely disappeared but is constantly imitated, and our very incomplete knowledge of his biography sees him now as a wise man, now as a gallant old man in the pejorative sense of the term. For those who emulate and imitate him, the issue of getting these two apparently contradictory figures, that of the wise Anacreon lauded by Plato and that of the gallant Anacreon whose name has been given to a poetic school associated with light-heartedness and a bachic or erotic inspiration, to coincide, has at times been raised. The gaps in our knowledge have led to the constitution of a fantasy, according to a logic whose issues need to be analysed. The proliferation of the biographical imagination seems to insert itself in the gaps in the works themselves, works which could not themselves exist without the effort put into reconstructing an authorial figure and legitimising him as a model, which has meant rehabilitating his gallantry and presenting it as a poetic and social ideal as well as an erotic one.
