RésuméLa civilisation des loisirs a des conséquences sur la transformation et la requalification des espaces. Cet article se propose de mettre ces changements « à l’épreuve du genre » en montrant comment ils s’inscrivent dans une continuité historique d’espaces marqués par la ségrégation des sexes, la domination masculine et les stéréotypes de genre, mais aussi par l’émergence d’espaces utopiques de mixité, d’égalité et de tolérance à la diversité. En préambule il sera nécessaire de s’interroger sur les liens qui existent entre corps, genre et espace. Le temps libre sera présenté ensuite comme une mutation importante des sociétés modernes et postmodernes. Sur le corps/espace/temps ainsi décrit, la trame historique fait apparaître la reproduction des rapports de genre mais aussi les mécanismes et les institutions historiques qui tentent d’arracher ces invariants à l’histoire. Quelques exemples empruntés à la géographie du temps libre (lieux sportifs, plages, espaces publics de loisirs urbains) permettent d’illustrer le propos. Le fait d’intégrer la variable sexe/genre à l’analyse des espaces du temps libre peut ouvrir des perspectives innovantes pour une géographie qui serait à la fois sociale et culturelle.

Gender and leisure spacesThe civilization of leisure activities has repercussions for change and renewal of spaces. This article aims to put these changes to the “gender test”, showing how they fall into a historical continuity of spaces marked by segregation of the sexes, male domination and gender stereotypes, but also by the emergence of utopian spaces allowing mixing between men and women, equality and tolerance to diversity. A necessary preamble is to examine the relationships which exist between body, gender and space. Leisure time is then presented as a significant change in modern and post-modern societies. The historical interpretations concerning the body/space/time relations describe, highlight a reproduction of the gender relations but also the historical mechanisms and institutions which attempt to pull these non-variables out from the full story. Some examples borrowed from the geography of leisure (sporting areas, beaches, urban public leisure spaces) are taken to illustrate the argument presented. The fact of integrating the variable sex/gender into the analysis of leisure spaces can open new perspectives for a geography that would be both social and cultural.
