L’article se propose de brosser un panorama historique de la notion d’imaginaire. L’emploi substantivé de l’adjectif (des équivalents existent désormais dans la plupart des langues européennes) se répand à la fin du xixe siècle, mais l’élaboration théorique date des années 1940 et 1950. Après Sartre, Bachelard, Blanchot, Lacan (puis bien d’autres) s’emparent d’un terme devenu un mot-clé des sciences humaines à l’apogée de leur prestige.Après la « chasse à l’imaginaire » conduite par la theoria des années 1960 et 1970, et la banalisation du terme, sa faveur académique paraît aujourd’hui décliner. C’est le moment que choisissent les industries de l’imaginaire pour entreprendre sa « modélisation ».

After Sartre, Bachelard, Blanchot, Lacan (and then many others) grabbed hold of a term which has since become a key word of the human sciences at the acme of their prestige.After the « hunt on the imaginary » set forth by the Theory of the 60s and 70s, and the banalisation of the term, it seems to be declining in use in contemporary academia.
