The many works of Ponge devoted to the painter Braque renew the traditional art critic: they constitute what can be called, according to a movement of today's theory, an “arrière-texte” of pictorial creation. These texts, which are focused more on the creative move than on the very painting they lead us to look at with a fresh eye, reveal in the painter's work the interlaced work of the body, culture and circumstances. Though Ponge's writing poetically plays on the confusion between language and metalanguage, and facilitates the identification of the poet with the painter in a chosen community of artists, the “arrière-texte” allows us to grasp the historically dated inflections of a speech which asserts its progressive detachment from worldly matters. The “arrière-texte”, also looking ahead, allows us to understand the philosophical stakes linked to Francis Ponge's works.
