Peut-on se positionner avec Marx dans le champ contemporain des théories de l’écologie politique ? Contre les critiques habituelles adressés au marxisme pour avoir délaissé cette question, il s’agit ici de renverser le stigmate en pointant les limites des deux grands courants qui se sont succédé dans ce domaine : l’écologie essentialiste et l’écologie anthropologique de Bruno Latour. Contre la présupposition d’une nature substantielle de la première et la dissolution de l’opposition de la nature et de la société opérée par la seconde, une lecture renouvelée du « naturalisme critique » de Marx permet d’envisager la question écologique d’un point de vue proprement social.

How to take a Marxist stand in the contemporary field of political ecology ? By inverting the usual critique of Marxism, accused of ignoring the ecological issue, this article points out the limitations of the two main theoretical streams of political ecology : the essentialist ecology and the anthropologist ecology, the latter being based on the work of Bruno Latour. Against any presupposition of a substantial nature in the former and against the dissolution of Nature and Society undertaken by the latter, a renewed reading of the “critical naturalism” of Marx allows a proper social consideration on the ecological issue.
