Parti de la poésie surréaliste avec le groupe La Main à la Plume pendant la Résistance dans laquelle il s’engagea à vingt ans, André Stil se convertit au roman et à la nouvelle réalistes à la Libération. La rencontre avec Aragon à Lille, au journal Liberté permit la publication de son premier recueil de nouvelles Le Mot mineur, camarades. À la suite de romans remarqués, dont Au château d’eau qui obtint le prix Staline, l’écrivain envisagea une somme intitulée La Question du bonheur est posée. Il apparaît que les accidents de la vie, tempérant quelque peu l’optimisme de la jeunesse, nourrirent son inspiration. Une chose est certaine, le romancier a bien connu le drame de l’écriture. Né dans un milieu pauvre, bénéficiant très jeune d’une grande reconnaissance, André Stil présente un exemple original de compréhension et de fidélité au monde ouvrier.

Member of Surrealist poetry with the group La main à la plume during the Resistance time André Stil engaged himself in that movement for twenty years. At the end of the second war he decided to write realist novels and short stories. Andre Stil took up the post of Secretary-General of the Party newspaper Liberté when he met Louis Aragon. Supported by Aragon, Stil published his first novel, with the « engagé » title « Le Mot “mineur”, camarade » (« The Word ‘Coalminer’, Comrade »). It was followed by his famous books like the trilogy « Le Premier Choc – Château d’eau » translated as The First Clash which was awarded the Stalin Prize. « La question du bonheur est poséée » is one of his attractive works. André Stil used to say that accidents of life have inspired and motivated him, broadened his experience. One thing is certain is that this author knew the tragedy of writing. Andre Stil was born in the coal-mining region, he belonged to the poor social class and he became a well-known author. He always referred to his coal background in his books and had been faithful to the working class all his life.
