Comme la bataille de Poitiers, celle de Roncevaux en 778 est devenue un mythe constitutif du Roman national. Dans les deux cas, les ennemis désignés, fourbes, cruels, parfois inhumains, sont les Arabes, les musulmans, les Sarrasins… Les destinées de Roncevaux ont quelque chose de fascinant. Il y a eu comme deux regards sur la bataille : celui de l’investigation érudite, patiente, conforme aux méthodes classiques de la recherche en histoire ; et celui qui ne se soucie aucunement du premier et reproduit à l’infini une légende, née sous la plume de l’auteur de la Chanson de Roland.

Like the battle of Poitiers, the battle of Roncesvalles in 778 became a founding myth of the national Narrative. In both cases, the designated enemies, deceitful, cruel, sometimes inhuman, are the Arabs, the Muslims, the Saracens. The destinies of Roncesvalles have something fascinating. Two visions on the battle have developed : that of the erudite, patient investigation, in conformity with the traditional methods of research in history ; and that, not caring at all about the first and reproducing ad infinitum a legend, born under the pen of the author of the Song of Roland.
