Cet article explore la teneur du mot allemand «  Sehnsucht » qui reste intraduisible dans la langue française. Le but est de montrer, à titre d’exemple pour de nombreux mots freudiens intraduisibles, l’effet de certains mots étrangers sur les traducteurs et lecteurs. Au-delà du côté frustrant par le fait qu’ils restent impénétrables à la langue dans laquelle on cherche à les transposer, ils sollicitent l’imaginaire du traducteur qui va jusqu’à devoir chercher un néologisme pour en rendre compte. Ces intraduisibles, doublement étrangers, provoquent une forte impulsion interprétative chez les lecteurs, ce qui les mène au plus près du mot original.

This paper examines the substance of the German word “ Sehnsucht”, which is impossible to translate into French. Our aim is to show among various examples of many untranslatable Freudian words, the impact of specific foreign words upon translators and readers. Beyond the frustrating fact that these words remain impossible to understand in the language into which they are to be translated, they call upon the imagination of the translator, who may have to seek out a neologism in order to capture them. These untranslatable words, which are twice foreign, trigger a strong interpretive urge in readers, which brings them closer to the original word.
