Si la figure de l’altérité suppose l’utilisation d’une terminologie spécifique à la désignation de l’autre, les procédés d’auto-nomination offrent de manière détournée, un aperçu de ce qui constitue l’identité mouvante des groupes. La production de nouvelles catégories hiérarchisantes est significative des modifications sociales en cours et illustre pleinement que l’identité « se réduit moins à la postuler ou à l’affirmer qu’à la refaire, la reconstruire » (C. Lévi-Strauss, 2000 : 331).

Approaching the naming system in a Sahara tribe (Aït Khebbach) in South-eastern morocco, individual membership refers to tribal denominations that testify to the importance of tribes and to the social, political and cultural configurations to which they lead. if the figure of otherness supposes using a specific terminology to name the other, the processes of self-naming indirectly give us a glimpse of what makes for the shifting identity of the groups. the production of new hierarchical categories is significant of the social changes under way and fully illustrates the fact that « postulating or declaring an identity reduces it less than remaking or reconstructing it » (C. Lévi-Strauss, 2000 : 331).
