The notion of initiation has become central to the reflection on the transmission of faith and on catechesis. In the current context – an anthropological crisis and a crisis of mediation – the Christian experience of initiation is the privileged mode of proposing faith. On the one hand, the initiation experience has an anthropological density, being a radical experience of passage, of a ritualized “dying in order to live” that is a school of life. On the other hand, the specifically Christian experience of initiation confers an understanding of the faith by experiencing the mystery which it brings to life: in the sacraments of initiation, in an exchange of words and an encounter with the Word of God, in the liturgy that enables us to live the Paschal mystery in time and corporeally… Experience of that mystery which is a veritable Paschal experience of conversion and vocation. That being said, could we not speak of a Christian art of initiation? The Christian experience of initiation invites us to traverse the experience of initiation and the artistic experience as paths for learning how to become human, at a time when the humanist consensus which reigned in the past seems to have disappeared. Moreover, it would be beneficial in future to draw increasingly on artistic experience in order to present the latter as a process of humanization through the Gospel.
