Dès les années 1940, l’Unesco s’intéresse à ce qu’on appelle alors la « conservation de la nature » grâce à son premier directeur général, le scientifique Julian Huxley. La conscience de l’environnement (années 1960), associée ensuite au développement, mène l’Unesco à organiser la Conférence sur la biosphère (1968). Avec le programme « L’Homme et la Biosphère » (1970), puis le « Programme des Nations unies pour l’environnement » (1972), elle renforce son action en faveur de l’environnement.

Is the Unesco a Pioneer of Ecology ?As early as the 1940s, the Unesco was a pioneer in the interest it took in « nature preservation », due to the commitment of Julian Huxley, its then director general, who was also a scientist. In the 1960s, environmental issues later associated with the theme of development paved the way for the 1968 Biosphere Conference that represented a turning point. In 1972, with the emergence of green thinking throughout theworld, the United Nations Environmental Program was created. Then, in the 1970s, the “Man and Biosphere” Unesco program strengthened the organization’s policy for the environment.
