Actually, widespread American disillusionment with international law and organization began in 1914 with the outbreak of World War I. Many Americans became convinced that European civilization had failed to emerge from the excesses of state sovereignty and militarism. This essay illustrates the onset of American disillusionment with Europe and with international law and organization between 1914 and 1946.
