En 1907, les femmes sionistes fondent, en marge du viie congrès sioniste à La Haye, l’Association des femmes juives pour un travail culturel en Palestine. En mettant en œuvre un programme d’amélioration du « matériel humain » palestinien, visant à inculquer la valeur-travail aux femmes sépharades et à leur enseigner les règles de base de l’hygiène et de l’esthétique européenne, cette association établit un rapport colonial entre diaspora ashkénaze et communauté sépharade palestinienne. Cependant, par manque de connaissances précises sur cette communauté, l’Association a donc recours à l’expertise d’une de ses membres présente sur place.

Jewish Women in Palestine in the light of Zionism during the “Belle Epoque”In 1907, during the 7th Zionist Congress in La Haye, Zionist women founded the Jewish Women’s Association for Cultural Work in Palestine. Implementing a program to enhance the Palestinian “human material”, whose aim was both to instill labour values within Sefarad Women and to teach them the basic European hygienic and aesthetic rules, this association introduced a colonial relationship between the Ashkenaze Diaspora and the Palestinian Sefarad community. Nevertheless its leaders lacked accurate knowledge on this community, which is why they took advantage of the expertise of one of their members who was already living in Palestine.
