La prise d’Alger en 1830 est souvent considérée comme l’avènement d’un nouvel impérialisme français, prétendument civilisateur. Les travaux sur la périodisation de l’impérialisme britannique et une relecture des sources disponibles dans une perspective globale incitent toutefois à remettre en cause ce lieu commun. Alger était autant l’aboutissement d’un long travail de réinvention qu’un commencement. En fait, la prise d’Alger a confirmé plus qu’elle n’a causé l’adhésion des libéraux français à l’expansion coloniale.

The capture of Algiers in 1830 is still often seen as marking the advent of a new, allegedly civilising French imperialism. Works on the periodisation of British imperialism and a reconsideration of the available evidence through a global lens tend to undermine this perception. Algiers was the culmination of a long work of reinvention as well as a new beginning. In particular, Algiers confirmed rather than caused the adhesion of French liberals to colonial expansion.
