De 1945 à 1962, en Indochine puis en Algérie, la France est confrontée à deux guerres d’indépendance. Les nationalistes utilisent les prisonniers qu’ils font pour peser sur le rapport de forces engagé avec la puissance coloniale. La comparaison menée ici entre ces deux situations permet d’interroger les points de similitude (acteurs, enjeux) et de spécificité (contexte, nombre, organisation) observés, conduisant les deux auteurs à affiner la caractérisation des deux conflits, jusqu’à questionner, sur le temps long, les leçons tirées de ces expériences et leurs effets sur les discours mémoriels.

From 1945 to 1962, in Indochina and Algeria, France had to deal with two wars of independence. Nationalist forces used the prisoners they had made in order to weigh upon the power balance with the colonial power. Comparing these two French captivities in colonial context allows to examine their similarities (agents, issues…) as well as the observed specificities (context, number, organization), the authors are thus led to refine their description of these conflicts, and question in the long-term, the lessons drawn from these experiences and their effects on narratives of memory.
