Si dans ses discours, Pie XII a élargi la conception catholique des droits naturels aux droits civils et politiques, et fait émerger des principes et des libertés approfondis par son successeur Jean XXIII, il existe un vide historiographique quant à sa promotion des droits de l’homme. Cet article dresse le bilan de son rapport aux droits humains à la lumière des conceptions traditionnelles de l’Église, examine le silence officiel sur la Déclaration onusienne de 1948, et envisage les apports des nouvelles archives vaticanes.

While Pius XII’s speeches expanded the Catholic understanding of natural rights to include civil and political rights, and brought forth principles and freedoms that were deepened by his successor Jean XXIII, there is a historiographical void regarding his promotion of human rights. This article assesses his relationship to human rights in light of traditional Church understandings, examines the official silence on the 1948 UN Declaration, and considers the contributions of the new Vatican archives.
