The Human Proteome Project (HPP) is an international project that aims to revolutionize our understanding of the human proteome through a coordinated effort by numerous research laboratories around the world. It has been structured into two branches: the C-HPP organized into as many groups as there are human chromosomes and the B/D-HPP organized into initiatives whose main goal is to apply proteome analysis technologies to better understand the molecular mechanisms that underlie physiological and pathophysiological processes. The two main objectives of the HPP are to establish a comprehensive inventory of proteins encoded by the human genome and to characterize the functions of these proteins and their numerous proteoforms. In this mini-review we will discuss the state of progress of the HPP, the upcoming project, called HPP Grand Challenge and the interest for the community of researchers and clinicians in Reproductive Biology to participate in this new endeavor.

Le Human Proteome Project (HPP) est un projet international qui vise à révolutionner notre compréhension du protéome humain grâce à l’effort coordonné de nombreux laboratoires de recherche à travers le monde. Le HPP a été structuré en deux branches : le Chromosome-Centric HPP, organisé en autant de groupes que de chromosomes humains, et le Biology/Disease-driven HPP, organisé en initiatives, et dont le but principal est d’appliquer les technologies d’analyse des protéomes pour mieux appréhender les mécanismes moléculaires qui sous-tendent les processus physiologiques et pathophysiologiques. Les deux principaux objectifs du HPP sont d’établir l’inventaire des protéines codées par le génome humain et de caractériser les fonctions de ces protéines et de leurs nombreuses protéoformes. Dans cet article, seront discutés l’état d’avancement du HPP, le projet à venir, appelé HPP Grand Challenge, et l’intérêt d’y participer pour la communauté des chercheurs et cliniciens en biologie de la reproduction.
