Le concept de « contenu » ( Inhalt), qui a occupé la philosophie allemande pendant tout le Xixe siècle, notamment dans le débat sur la « musique absolue », forme un élément central et une préoccupation constante de la pensée de Schenker. Dans Der Geist der musikalischen Technik, Schenker décrit l’évolution de la musique en trois étapes : d’abord, l’explosion spontanée d’un plaisir accumulé ; puis une tentative d’imiter le langage et la pensée conceptuelle ; enfin, la libération du modèle linguistique et le développement d’une logique proprement musicale, fondée notamment sur la répétition. C’est la répétition qui fonde le motif, ce « mot-enson » ( Tonwort) du langage musical. C’est elle qui dote la musique d’un contenu proprement musical, qui ne requiert ni référence mondaine, ni narration, ni programme littéraire.

Heinrich Schenker, the content of music and the languageThe concept of “content” ( Inhalt), that had busied German philosophy during the whole of the 19th century, among others in the debate about “absolute music”, forms a central element and a constant preoccupation in Schenker’s thought. In Der Geist der musikalischen Technik, Schenker describes the evolution of music in three stages : first, the spontaneous outburst of accumulated delight ; then, an attempt to imitate language and conceptual thought ; and eventually the development of a properly musical logic, based among others on repetition. Repetition is what founds the motif, this “word-in-sound” ( Tonwort) of musical language. It is repetition that endows music with a properly musical content, requiring neither a reference to the world, nor a narration, nor a literary program.
