RésuméDans cet article, l’auteur explique la nature d’une pratique d’intervention originale qu’elle conduit avec plusieurs collègues depuis de nombreuses années auprès d’enfants soignés pour un cancer dans le service de pédiatrie d’un grand hôpital spécialisé. Cette pratique est celle de clowns qui interviennent une fois par semaine pour et avec les enfants, mais aussi pour et avec les familles, ainsi que le personnel soignant, de façon à soulager la souffrance. À travers plusieurs exemples, l’auteur montre comment leur travail s’appuie sur ce qu’ils voient, entendent, ressentent de l’état de l’enfant, de sa réceptivité au jeu et au spectacle improvisé. Le vécu des enfants est ainsi théâtralisé dans l’univers des clowns, sous forme de métaphore, par une transposition dans un registre symbolique et le détournement ludique de leur univers médicalisé. Par leurs interventions, les clowns portent ainsi sur l’enfant un regard différent de celui des soignants et l’aident à supporter l’hospitalisation grâce à ces moments de légèreté et de dégagement par l’imaginaire.

In this article, the author explains the nature of an original intervention practice she has conducted with several colleagues for many years for children cured for cancer disease in a section of a big specialized hospital. This practice is that of clowns who intervene once a week for and with the children but also for and with the families and the staff in order to decrease the pain. Through several examples, the author shows how their work is based on what they see, hear, feel from the state of the child, his openness to the playing and the improvised show. So, the experience of the children is « theatralised » within the clown universe, in the form of a metaphor, by a transposition in a symbolic mode and through the playful diversion of their medicalised world. Through their intervention, clowns show a different appreciation of the children than that of the caring staff. They help them tolerate the hospital life thanks to these moments of lightness and relief by the imaginary.
