La frontière entre l’Indochine française et le Siam est définie par un traité conclu entre le royaume asiatique et la France en 1907. Par ce traité, la France abandonne son droit de protection extraterritoriale sur ses ressortissants asiatiques, tandis que le Siam rétrocède au Cambodge, protectorat français, les trois provinces situées dans la région d’Angkor. Le vrai acteur français des négociations est le lieutenant-colonel Fernand Bernard. Il réussit à régler définitivement l’épineuse question territoriale grâce à sa compréhension précise de l’intérêt siamois et à son rapport étroit avec le parti colonial ainsi qu’avec certains personnages politiques influents.

The border between French Indochina and Siam was defined by a treaty signed between the Asian kingdom and France in 1907. Through this treaty, France gave up its right to extraterritorial protection on its Asian nationals, while Siam surrendered to Cambodia, a French protectorate, the three provinces in the Angkor region. The real French actor of the negotiation was Lieutenant Colonel Fernand Bernard. He managed to finally settle the thorny territorial issue thanks to his precise understanding of the Siamese interest and his close relationship with the “Parti colonial” as well as some influential political figures.
