L’introduction du corps dans la réflexion historique, en particulier à propos du monde colonial, fait immanquablement penser à l’article déjà ancien de Marcel Mauss proposant l’étude des « Techniques du corps ». Cet article revient d’abord sur la réflexion de l’anthropologue et sa méthode, la notion de Techniques du corps elle-même et quelques principes de classification. Il constate ensuite, au-delà de la lecture de l’article d’origine, aujourd’hui parfois décevant, la postérité du concept, en particulier bien sûr chez les ethnologues, chez qui est alors aussi formulé le concept de « situation coloniale ». Il s’interroge enfin sur les usages du concept dans le champ renouvelé de l’histoire, en particulier en perspective coloniale.

The introduction of the Body into historical reflection, especially about the colonial world, inevitably brings to mind the already ancient article by Marcel Mauss proposing the study of “the Body Techniques”. This article first reviews the anthropologist’s thinking and his method, the concept of Body Techniques and some classification principles. He then notes, beyond the reading of the original article, today sometimes disappointing, the posterity of the concept, especially of course among ethnologists, in whom is also formulated the concept of “colonial situation”. Finally, he wonders about the uses of the concept in the renewed field of history, especially in colonial perspective.
