Quand les personnes très pauvres méditent l’évangile, elles prennent Dieu au mot, en lisant l’Écriture comme une promesse, résonnant avec la promesse qui qualifie toute vie humaine. La rencontre de la promesse évangélique avec leur quotidien est de type pascal : elle peut faire surgir un cri qui révèle la puissance de leur prière, ou rendre compte de la résurrection. Elle peut encore attester la présence de Dieu là même où sa promesse paraît démentie. L’écho que les personnes très pauvres offrent à l’évangile se révèle ainsi plein d’une singulière autorité.

The Gospel, promise for the poorWhen very poor people meditate on the Gospel, they take God at his word, reading Scripture as a promise which resonates with the promise qualifying every human life. The encounter of Gospel promise with their everyday experience is an Easter encounter: it can provoke a shout revealing the power of their prayer or giving an account of the resurrection. It can again give witness to the presence of God in the very place where his promise appeared to be discounted. The reaction which very poor people bring to the Gospel is thus shown to be one of singular authority.
