Dans cet entretien, Gabriel Hatti, fils de commerçants libanais installés à Boghé à la fin des années 1920, relate sa jeunesse sur les bords du fleuve Sénégal, puis sa formation et son parcours original au sein de la jeune administration publique mauritanienne, d’abord dans les dernières années du régime de Moktar Ould Daddah, puis sous les militaires arrivés au pouvoir à la faveur du Coup d’État de juillet 1978, en pleine Guerre du Sahara. Il évoque également le rôle qu’il a joué à la création, en 1976, puis à la direction (1994-1999) du Parc national du Banc d’Arguin, ainsi que les enjeux multiples auxquels cette aire protégée fut et demeure confrontée.

In this interview, Gabriel Hatti, the son of Lebanese merchants who settled in Boghé in the late 1920s, recounts his youth on the banks of the Senegal River, then his training and his original career within the young Mauritanian public administration, first in the final years of the regime of Moktar Ould Daddah, then under the military who came to power in the July 1978 coup d’état, in the midst of the Sahara War. He also discusses the role he played in the creation, in 1976, and then in the management (1994-1999) of the Banc d’Arguin National Park, as well as the multiple issues that this protected area was and still is facing.
