L’administration territoriale de l’Indochine française, notamment les régions appelées à former le Vietnam contemporain, fit l’objet de nombreuses réformes commandées par la nécessité de conserver, dans la mesure du possible, le système antérieur à la colonisation en l’adaptant aux exigences de la domination française. A l’échelon provincial, il en résulta un accaparement des fonctions décisionnelles à peine compensé par l’établissement d’instances consultatives.

Reforms of the territorial administration in Indochina (1861-1945)The territorial administration in French Indochina, particularly in the regions called to form the modern Vietnam, has been the object of numerous reforms commanded by the necessity to preserve, as far as possible, the system set previously to colonization while adapting it to the requirements of the French domination. At the provincial level it led to a monopole of decision making functions hardly counterbalanced by the setting of advisory bodies.
