Les dieux participent-ils au tirage au sort ? Cette question, dans la Rome antique, est à la fois complexe et très concrète. Il s’agit de montrer ici que l’implication divine dans un tirage, qu’il soit divinatoire (sacral) ou civique, n’est pas conçue par les Romains selon une grille binaire, oui/non. Elle se manifeste au contraire par degrés d’évidence, depuis une participation de principe des dieux au rite jusqu’à l’association ou l’assimilation fréquentes de la sortitio, dans les sources narratives, à des prodiges spectaculaires.

Sortition and divination in Ancient Rome. Were the gods involved in casting lots?Were the gods involved in casting lots? For Ancient Romans, this question was both complex and very concrete. The aim of this paper is to show that the Romans did not conceive their gods’ involvement in either divinatory or civic sortition as occurring on a binary scale of yes or no. On the contrary, it became manifest gradually, beginning with the assumption that the gods paid attention to the rites, and ending (sometimes) with the most impressive prodigies—which narrative sources frequently associate or equate with sortitio.
