L’admission au G7/G8 symbolisait pour Moscou son rapprochement de « l’Occident collectif ». Mais l’admission fut lente, et Moscou ne fit jamais complètement partie du club. La Russie a bientôt pris conscience que le G8 n’était pas le directoire souhaité pour traiter ses préoccupations stratégiques. L’avènement du G20, et la crise ukrainienne, ont, pour Moscou, définitivement déclassé l’intérêt d’un G7, qui semble n’assurer que la défense et illustration des intérêts d’un Occident déclinant.

For Moscow, Russia’s admission into the G7/8 symbolized a rapprochement with “the West”. However, the process was slow-going, and Moscow never truly became part of the club. Russia soon realized that the G8 was not the hoped-for platform for addressing its strategic concerns. With the advent of the G20 and the Ukrainian crisis, the G7 sank irrevocably in Moscow’s estimation, seeming to promise little more than to espouse and elucidate the interests of the waning West.
