L’article s’intéresse à la controverse sur le développement des enfants vivant dans des familles homoparentales qui s’est déroulée en France à la fin du XXe siècle et lorsque le projet de mariage fut voté. Le travail étudie certains des arguments mobilisés et analyse les formes de la controverse. L’article suggère que le débat n’est pas resté strictement cantonné au devenir des enfants mais a également abordé la question du genre et de sa pertinence tout comme les capacités sociales des personnes gaies et lesbiennes. Certains éléments ont pu faire penser qu’il s’agissait d’une nouvelle opposition entre les sciences expérimentales et de la nature versus les sciences sociales. Néanmoins les oppositions ont d’abord circulé à l’intérieur de chacune et le débat a montré combien les représentants des sciences du psychisme étaient divisés. C’est également à cette occasion que s’est posée la question de savoir quelles pouvaient être les bases d’une expertise psy sur la famille.

The child of the controversy: psychiatry and same sex parenthoodThe article raises the controversial issue of the development of the child living in same sex families which has been held in France at the end of the twentieth century and when the gay marriage was legalized. The article explores some of the arguments and analyses several elements of the controversy. Our work suggests that the debate was not strictly limited to the raising of the child but was enlarged to the notion of the gender and its relevance and the capacities of the gay and lesbian persons. The debates seemed to be organized according to the traditional separation between the experimental sciences on the one hand and the social sciences on the other hand. Nevertheless the oppositions were mainly within psychiatry and psychology and the disciplines appeared fairly divided. The dispute has also arose another question : what could be the basis of a legitimate psychological expertise on the family.
