Dans cet article, nous aborderons la question des communautés mathématiques par le biais d’un dispositif technique : la production et l’interprétation d’images. En mathématiques, si les images sont omniprésentes dans le contexte informel des séminaires, elles sont presque totalement évincées dans le contexte formel de validation des connaissances des articles publiés. Face à ce constat, nous avons cherché à caractériser le rôle et le statut de ces images pour un ensemble de mathématiciens habitués à travailler ensemble, en analysant en quoi ces usages diversifiés, mais également les démarcations qu’ils peuvent induire, renvoient à différentes définitions de la notion de communauté. Nous montrerons notamment que si, dans un contexte formel, il est fait référence à une communauté comprenant l’ensemble des mathématiciens et renvoyant à une forme de doxa commune à tous les chercheurs en mathématiques, dans un contexte plus informel, c’est davantage une communauté de pratiques qui est alors impliquée et constitue l’enjeu de l’interaction.

The question of « mathematical communities » will be tackled starting with the technical device of production and interpretation of pictures. In mathematics, if pictures are everywhere within the informal context of seminars, they disappear within the formal context of published papers. In this article, I will try to characterise the role and the status of scientific pictures for group of mathematicians that usually work together, analyzing to what extent these different functions, but also the boudaries they can imply, refer to different definitions of what a comunity is. I will show that if within a formal context, uses refer to a global notion of community involving mathematicians from all over the world, within an informal context, it is rather a community of practices that is at aim.
