Le champ de la recherche interculturelle présente plusieurs caractéristiques : un caractère pluridisciplinaire et transversal, ainsi qu’une grande richesse dans la variété des travaux et des approches, mais aussi des définitions. En France, l’interculturel n’est pas une notion figée, ni dans la terminologie ni dans les objets étudiés ; on peut tout de même y relever des grands domaines, comme l’éducation et la pédagogie ou encore le management et la gestion des entreprises. Cette orientation empirique vers la formation renvoie à la naissance de la recherche interculturelle sur le terrain, ce qui explique également la relative moindre importance de la théorie. Une mise en perspective historique des préoccupations interculturelles doit aussi nous amener à nous poser la question des raisons de son émergence et de la signification de sa fortune critique.

The field of intercultural research has many characteristics : multidisciplinary and also very rich in variety of works, approaches and definitions. In France, intercultural is not a set notion, neither in the terminology nor in the items ; some main scopes appears however, like education, pedagogy or management. This empirical orientation to a formation purpose is related to the birth on the ground of the intercultural research. This also explains the least importance of theoretical propositions. By having an historical view on intercultural research, we mainly have to wonder about the reasons of his emergence and the meaning of his critical fortune.
