RésuméRécemment les manifestations racistes et xénophobes semblent se multiplier dans les stades au point qu'hommes politiques, dirigeants sportifs, voire le pape en personne, les dénoncent et annoncent des mesures pour éradiquer le phénomène. Mais ces problèmes sont ils si récents ? L'annonce de mesures pour éradiquer ce qui se donne à voir dans les stades de football ne répond elle pas de la logique de l'urgence médiatique face à un trouble de « l'ordre en public » ? Ces prises de position amalgament de fait des manifestations et des comportements qui n'ont bien souvent rien à voir entre eux, bien que hautement condamnables, au lieu de chercher à interpréter ce qui se donne à voir dans les stades afin d'adapter les réponses politiques et sociales et tenter de s'en prémunir. C'est à l'analyse des idéologies existantes ou émergentes dans les stades, réalisée à partir d'une recherche sur le hooliganisme commencée depuis bientôt dix ans que s'intéresse cet article, en examinant à travers différents exemples de manifestations racistes les constructions identitaires et sociales mais aussi les processus sociaux à l'œuvre dans les tribunes des stades européens.

Racism, xenophobia and political ideologies in soccer stadiumsRacist and xenophobic incidents in soccer stadiums seem to be on the rise lately, prompting politicians, sports leaders, even the pope in person, to denounce this phenomenon and announce measures for its eradication. But are these problems all that recent? Aren't the announcements of measures to stop what goes on in the stadiums a response to the urging of the media in the face of disturbances of the "order in public"? In fact, these stances indiscriminately lump together manifestations and behaviors which, though highly reprehensible, often have nothing to do with each other, instead of trying to interpret the goings-on in the stadiums with a view to adapting political and social responses accordingly and attempting to guard against them.Based on a study of hooliganism begun nearly 10 years ago, the foregoing article analyzes existing and emerging ideologies in the stadiums, scrutinizing diverse manifestations of racism in order to examine social and identity constructs as well as the social processes at work in the bleachers of European stadiums.
