RésuméL’objectif de cet article est de restituer les conditions de la réception des théories néolibérales américaines en France à partir de la trajectoire du groupe des « Nouveaux Économistes » qui en ont été les principaux promoteurs. Ce néo-libéralisme fonde sa légitimité sur les renouvellements méthodologiques et épistémologiques de la science économique aux États-Unis. Il prend la forme d’un « libéralisme scientifique » critiquant les défaillances de l’État en matière économique et sociale. Les médiateurs français du néo-libéralisme ont opéré un processus de retraduction et de réappropriation de cette idéologie pour l’adapter au contexte politique français, en privilégiant sa version radicalisée et positiviste théorisée sur les campus américains. Elle est alors mobilisée pour répondre aux contestations de la science économique et du capitalisme élaborées par des intellectuels du Parti socialiste, et se pose en critique du programme économique des gauches. L’article contribue d’une part à souligner la pertinence de la démarche contextualiste pour saisir la circulation transnationale des idées politiques, d’autre part à déshomogénéiser le néolibéralisme, en mettant en évidence la rupture idéologique qu’incarne ce moment de réception par rapport au néo-libéralisme d’inspiration ordo-libérale qui prévalait jusque-là.

A “scientific liberalism” against the lefts. The reception of american neo-liberalism in France in the 1970sThe aim of this article is to understand the conditions of the reception of American neoliberalism in France based on a study of the trajectory of the “Nouveaux Économistes” who were its main proponents. This brand of neo-liberalism bases its legitimacy on the renewal of the methods and epistemologies of economics in the United States, which took the form of a “scientific liberalism” that criticised the failures of the State in the domains of the economy and society. The French intermediary of neo-liberalism translated and reclaimed this ideology in the French political context by putting forward its radicalised and positivist version which has been theorised at certain American universities. In turn it was used in opposition to contemporary critics of economics and capitalism formulated by some intellectuals within the Socialist Party and portrayed itself as an opponent of the economic agenda of the left in the wake of their electoral ascent. This article, on the one hand, underlines the relevance of the contextualist approach to the study of the circulation of political ideas, and on the other, “dehomogeneizes” neo-liberalism by making evident the ideological breach of the moment of its reception compared to the former prevailing neo-liberalism influenced by German ordo-liberalism.
