Though situated a long way away from the harbours of the Atlantic, the city of Lille, in the XVIIIth century, is a major trading centre. As soon as the new commodities from the colonies become available, it plays the card of sugar. First the fruit of the efforts of courageous investors, refining becomes exclusively controlled by the trading circles after the Seven Year War. The evolution of this industry itself follows the rhythm of conflicts. But the real handicaps that limit the expansion of the Lille sugar industry are smuggling and the French customs system. Zodra koloniale producten ingevoerd werden kiest men voor suiker. In het begin zijn er een paar moedige investeerders en na de Zevenjarige oorlog is de raffinage exclusief een zaak van de handelaars. Deze activiteit wordt bepaald door de conflicten. Een nog grotere handicap voor de expansie van de suiker van Rijsel zijn zowel de smokkel als het Franse douanesysteem. Men ontdekt in deze studie ook wat er achter de fabrieksmuren gebeurde op het gebied van personeel, kapitaal, aanvoer van grondstoffen en verkoop.
