Le fonctionnement légal et administratif de l’archéologie dans les vingt-trois cantons suisses est abordé. Des compétences réelles sont déléguées aux cantons depuis 1912, la Confédération se bornant à un rôle subsidiaire : elle attribue aux cantons qui en font la demande, depuis 1961, le financement des fouilles conduites sur le tracé des autoroutes et d’autres chantiers d’infrastructures nationales. L’inquiétude des milieux archéologiques est aussi évoquée, relative dans l’immédiat à l’exploitation scientifique par les auteurs de la collecte d’une masse considérable de données, fragmentées par cantons, et pour un avenir sans subsides fédéraux à hauteur de ce que la Suisse a connu au cours des quatre dernières décennies.

The legal and administrative framework of archaeology works in the 23 Swiss cantons is here analyzed. Real competence have been transfered to the cantons since 1912, the Confederation limiting itself to a subsidiary role : it has granted, since 1961, the cantons that formally demand it, the funding of the excavations carried out along the motorway routes and for other infrastructure works of a national scale. The worry of the archaeological world is also hinted at, with regard, in the short term, to the scientific exploitation by their discoverers of a considerable mass of data, scattered over many cantons, and in the longer term, to a future without federal subsidies equivalent to what Switzerland has known over the past four decades.
