Dans le Nord de la France, l’évolution sédimentaire de la vallée et le régime de la rivière Deûle, ont été propices à l’enregistrement des données paléoenvironnementales et à la conservation de gisements archéologiques, dont l’importance est révélée depuis un peu plus de 150 ans par des découvertes et les recherches entreprises au sein de ce domaine géographique. L’attrait exercé par cette vallée et sa rivière a entraîné l’anthropisation de ce milieu, dont l’intensité, surtout depuis le xixe s., pouvait laisser croire à la disparition de la plus grande partie du patrimoine archéologique. La reprise de recherches systématiques permet de constater la présence et l’état de conservation de gisements archéologiques de la Préhistoire au Moyen Âge et de comprendre que certains contribuent au développement de problématiques scientifiques dont l’intérêt dépasse le cadre régional ou national. Cet article constitue un préambule à la publication des premiers résultats des recherches actuellement entreprises dans la vallée. Il permet de situer la rivière et les grandes lignes de son évolution. Son potentiel archéologique est présenté grâce à l’historique des recherches réalisées depuis la seconde moitié du xixe s. et à un premier bilan des prospections entreprises depuis le début des années 1990. L’argumentaire des mesures prises en faveur de la gestion du patrimoine archéologique est ensuite développé, dans la perspective d’une cohérence d’actions, afin de concilier à terme, les impératifs de la protection du patrimoine, de la recherche archéologique en particulier et ceux de l’aménagement de ce territoire spécifique.

Towards an Archaeology of the Deûle Valley (Nord)In Northern France, the sedimentary evolution of the valley and the flow of river Deûle were favourable to the recording of paleoenvironmental data and to the conservation of archaeological deposits whose importance has been confirmed over a little more than 150 years by discoveries and research carried out within this geographical area. The attraction of this valley and its river over populations have led to the anthropisation of this area, whose intensity, particularly since the xixth century, might have let us fear that the larger part of the archaeological remains had vanished. The resumption of systematic research has enabled us to ascertain the presence and witness the state of conservation of archaeological deposits from Prehistory to the Middle Ages and to understand that some of them contribute to raising scientific questions whose interest goes far beyond the regional or national scope. This paper is a preamble to the publication of the first results of research currently carried out along the valley. It aims at assessing the situation of the river and outlining the major features of its evolution. Its archaeological potential is introduced through a history of the research carried out since the first half of the xixth century and a first assessment of the probing work under way since the early 1990s. The paper then accounts for the measures taken to manage the archaeological patrimony, stressing the need for a coherent approach in order to conciliate in the future the imperatives of patrimony protection, in particular from the archaeological point of view, and those of the management of this specific territory.
