L’étude des chartes délivrées par les chapitres cathédraux est un aspect de la diplomatique encore peu exploré. À Thérouanne au xiie siècle, les chartes capitulaires sont plutôt rares (35 sont conservées), et sans relief particulier. Leur mauvais état de conservation (une seule est connue en original) ne permet pas de bien étudier le développement du sceau. En revanche, on constate que le chapitre n’a pu donner de chartes avec un contenu juridictionnel qu’après avoir dû l’imposer à l’évêque, ce qui montre bien que le chapitre cathédral n’est pas seulement un auxiliaire de celui-ci, mais aussi un concurrent.

The study of the charters granted by the Cathedral chapters is one of the still little explored aspects of diplomatics. In Thérouanne oin the xiith century, the capitular charters are fairly rare (35 have been preserved), and have no particular significance. Their poor state of repair (only one is known as an original) does not allow to study the evolution of the seal. On the other hand, it can be noticed that the chapter has never been able to grant a charter with a jurisdictional value without having first had to impose it on the bishop, which shows that the Cathedral chapter is not only an auxiliary of this latter but also a competitor.
