Les riches fonds d’archives conservés pour les paroisses du centre ville de Rouen permettent de se pencher de nouveau sur la question des fondations de messes par les fidèles, au xve siècle. Après avoir montré la diversité institutionnelle d’un geste qui peut cacher la création d’une « chapelle » à proprement parler ou la simple demande de célébrations eucharistiques périodiques, l’article montre en quoi ces fondations ont représenté une tâche de plus en plus lourde pour les fabriciens et le clergé. Certaines paroisses en retirèrent de substantiels revenus qui financèrent la reconstruction ou la rénovation des églises. Respectées avec plus de scrupule qu’on ne l’aurait cru, ces initiatives traduisent de la part de leurs auteurs un fort attachement à la communauté paroissiale, encore qu’il conviendrait de les rapporter à l’ensemble des dons prodigués par une même personne, ce que les sources n’autorisent pas toujours.

The rich fund of records kept about the parishes of the centre of Rouen permit to cast a new glance on the question of the foundation of masses by the faithful in the xvth century. After showing the institutional diversity of a gesture that can conceal the creation of a ‘chapel’ in the actual sense or the mere request for periodical celebrations of the eucharist, this paper shows in which respect these foundations have meant a heavier and heavier task for the fabricians and the clergy. Certain parishes draw substantial revenues from these that contributed to the re-building or the renovation of the church-buildings. Kept in higher respect that commonly thought, these initiatives betoken the strong commitment of their authors to the parish community, though this would have to be mitigated by relating them to the sum total of the gifts lavished by one and the same person, which the sources don’t always permit.
