Vivre en 1938… ne pas accepter l’irrémédiable, la guerre annoncée qui va ravager à nouveau l’Europe : voilà ce que donne à lire L’Âge nouveau.Européen convaincu, pacifiste, Marcello-Fabri fonde cette revue avec l’espoir qu’une union de bonnes intentions intellectuelles va arrêter la course à l’abîme. Et L’Âge nouveau s’ouvre aux écrivains ou artistes de France, des colonies et d’Europe qui pourront plaider la paix et une nouvelle société : œuvre plus facile à proposer qu’à réaliser.En effet, l’époque favorise le grand écart et les articles de la revue en témoignent : positions ambiguës, atermoiements, cohabitation d’opinions plus ou moins recevables …De cette lecture rétrospective on retiendra une France multiple et divisée face à la fin d’un monde, et l’éthique très moderne de la revue : l’Homme doit continuer à être.

Living in 1938… to refuse the irremediable, the oncoming war that would ravage Europe again : that is what L’Âge nouveau was about.A convinced European and a pacifist, Marcello-Fabri founded this periodical with the hope that a gathering of good intellectual intentions would stop the race to the bottomless pit. L’Âge nouveau was open to writers and artists from France, from French colonies and from Europe who could advocate peace and a new society : an aim easier to suggest than to achieve.Indeed, the period favored wide contradictions, and the articles of the review testify to this : ambiguous positions, procrastination, cohabitation of opinions more or less admissible …Of this retrospective reading, we will remember a multiple and divided France facing the end of a world, and the very modern ethics of the journal : Humanity must go on.
