RésuméLe château des comtes de Flandre à Gand est un exemple de forteresse princière parmi les mieux conservés de Belgique. Ce bon état de conservation est principalement dû au déblaiement des vestiges à la fin du xixe siècle et à la restauration du monument par Joseph de Waele au début du siècle passé. Quelles parties du monument sont authentiques ? à l’aide de divers documents iconographiques anciens (photographies, plans, peintures, dessins), nous tenterons d’apporter une réponse à cette interrogation. La comparaison entre ces documents et l’état actuel du château permet de retrouver l’aspect avant restauration de cet important témoin de l’histoire de l’architecture.

Note On the Restoration of Ghent’s Castle and the Turn of the xixth and xxth CenturiesThe Counts of Flanders castle’s in Ghent is one of the best preserved example of a princely fortress in Belgium. The good state of preservation is mainly due to the excavation of the ruins in the late nineteenth century and the restoration of the monument by Joseph de Waele early last century. Which parts of the monument are authentic ? Through the use of various ancient iconographic documents (photographs, plans, paintings, drawings), we will attempt to answer this question. The comparison between these documents and the current state of the castle will enable us to retrieve the aspect of this important witness of the history of architecture, before its restoration.
